A Snowy Day in December

December 17, 2021 Bryn Hazell

I’m looking out the window at a wintry white landscape with falling snow. A robin is bouncing around on the dark branches of a leafless tree in my front yard. They jump from branch to branch, turning their head this way and that, searching for any berries that others may have missed. It’s cold outside. The light is gray.

Hygge is a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment. (Wikipedia.) Photo by Shayna Douglas on Unsplash.

A few years ago, I found a book called, “The Little Book of Hygge” (pronounced HOO-GA). It brought me a wonderful new perspective on winter evenings (and sometimes days) which has enriched my life, and I have shared it with many others.

A day like today now invites that cozy, sensual experience of candles glowing, fuzzy slippers, soft blankets, a comfy chair, a cup of tea, a good book, a pad of paper to jot down whatever comes… or just gazing out the window and enjoying the scene.

I want to enjoy more such moments in the winter months ahead and these strategies help me do that. In NVC terms, I feel happy and cozy in the comfort and beauty that I see and create.

I pass along these hygge thoughts to you—hoping they bring you more sweet experiences this winter.

Best wishes for lovely feelings and many needs met these coming weeks—and for cozy and delightful hygge moments.
